Frequently Asked Questions

What is freelance copywriting?

Freelance copywriting/editing is when a professional writer is hired to write or edit copy for marketing campaigns, websites, advertising, brochures, press releases or any other written materials. Freelance writers are not salaried employees, rather independent contractors who run their own small business.

Why should I hire a freelance writer/editor?

There are innumerable reasons for hiring a professional writer/editor to work on important projects. Some of the key advantages include:

Improving your bottom line - you can reduce costs with "task-specific" help, only when you need it.

Increasing your efficiency - you don't have the time to be good at everything. Outsource your writing and keep your momentum.

Enhancing your image - a professional writer really does make a difference. A fresh perspective brings new enthusiasm and drive to your marketing and sales campaigns.

Making your life easier - when corporate downsizing creates staffing crunches, fill in with a freelancer.

Ensuring you will have solid copy - good writing doesn't just happen. It takes a lot of effort and a commitment to finding the right angle for your message.

How much do you charge?

My rates shift based on project difficultly, volume and whether a client consistently hires me for writing projects. Many times, I will quote a flat rate for work. Since every project is different, the best way to reach a solid estimate is to meet with me for a free consultation. I do offer discounts for non-profit companies.

How long is your turn-around time?

This depends on the kind of material involved, the size of the project and what other writing/editing assignments I am currently on. Before I accept any project I will commit to an agreed upon deadline that I will be able to meet. If you have a project that needs to be done immediately, it may be possible for me to rearrange my schedule to meet the deadline, but I will generally charge a higher hourly rate.

How do revisions work?

Two rounds of revisions are included in the bid for every project I accept. Additional revisions are invoiced at my normal hourly rate.

What are your qualifications?

I have bachelor's degree in Journalism/Mass Communications with a focus in PR from CU. After graduating, I worked as a senior-level communications specialist and web marketer at Sun Microsystems for 5 years. I have been freelance writing full time since 2004, and currently have a wide range of clients including medical professionals, multimedia agencies, SEO web design firms, temp agencies, manufacturing companies, law firms and more.

Do you design web sites?

I have designed, architected and coded many websites in my career. I do develop and content write basic websites for small businesses currently and am a great resource for companies that need a professional website but do not have a large budget. Contact me for more information.

What is corporate communications consulting?

Corporate communications consulting consists of providing clients with the communication strategy, execution and measurement they need for success. This includes communication plan creation, messaging for difficult communications (i.e. re-organizations, reductions in force) and Change Acceptance Process (CAP) communications, planning and management. I was responsible for these difficult tasks during my tenure at Sun Microsystems and have a great deal of expertise to offer my clients in this area.

What are your payment terms?

As all jobs are different, I will provide a quote for your project after our initial consultation. Short-term projects (two weeks or less) can be quoted as a flat rate. Longer projects may warrant hourly rates. One-third of the contracted amount will be due up front, with the balance paid at negotiated checkpoints.

Do you charge for research and meeting time?

In my bid, I will include time billed for research and meetings in addition to the two rounds of revisions that are automatically included in the contracted price. If additional reviews, meetings and research are needed, it will be billed at an hourly rate. Additional services may be billed separately.
